Does a UST Projector Need an ALR Screen?

A UST projector can produce an image on a wall, but the steep projection angle is exactly why purpose-built ALR/CLR screen structures can make such a visible difference in normal rooms.

Why UST screens are different

Ultra-short-throw projectors sit close to the wall and fire light upward. Many UST ALR screens use microscopic directional structures that favor light arriving from below while suppressing some light arriving from above or the sides. A plain wall cannot selectively manage light that way.

When ALR is most valuable

ALR becomes more valuable as the room becomes less like a theater: pale walls, uncovered windows, ceiling lights and daytime viewing all wash out perceived black level. If you routinely watch with ambient light, the screen is part of the projection system rather than an optional accessory.

When a simpler screen can still work

In a well-controlled dark room, the gap can shrink. A neutral, flat surface may be acceptable if you value simplicity and can eliminate most stray light. The key requirement remains flatness: UST geometry exposes wall texture, bowing and uneven surfaces very quickly.

How this connects to the PET Crystal Classic

The Classic is built around that living-room use case: motorized concealment plus an 85% ALR claim. If your room is darker and you do not need the screen to retract, you may be paying for two capabilities—ALR and motorization—that your room does not need.
